A Purpose
Most of my subject matter is about the geological time scale, flora and fauna that either currently exist on the planet today or did exist thousands to millions of years ago. I look at the process of evolution, fossilization (fossil fuels), and how all of this is affected by and affects modern humanity. My work uses recycled materials, 50 –100%, depending on the piece and what materials I am able to find. While I use plastic, paper, and sometimes metal waste, I work heavily in fiber.
I have reused items throughout my life because of how I was raised. In my neighborhood most of the families are considered low income and it is common for me to see people using and reusing items until they are basically disintegrated. My audience is the public. When I was a child I loved free art as it was one of the only ways I could access art, something I want to be able to give to the next generation. Especially for children who grow up in lower income areas, an access to public art is essential.
I've experimented mostly with colorful, large scale weaving and tapestry projects. My goal is to make large soft spaces from recycled materials including plastic and textile waste, to display in community spaces around Chicago’s libraries, schools, hospitals, community centers, and parks for people to sit in and enjoy.
I use ‘waste’ both because I am currently not in a position where I can spend a lot of money on expensive materials, and because it is important to the subject matter of my work. The repurposing of waste relates to the plants and animals that I take inspiration from, as well as the humans in the public community that I'm making artwork for. I am recycling and reusing not just for me but for them!
